Year 1732 and has been complied with by the Keepers even to the
present time but upon search it is found that this Order is not now
hung up either in the Gaol of Newgate or at the Court at the Old
Bailey the Court of Aldermen have however since its date appointed
several Committees to inquire into the Profits of the Keeper Etc And in
the Year 1744 upon such a Referrence the following Report and Order
thereupon was made Vizt.

This day the Committee appointed to consider what
shall be allowed the Keeper of Newgate for executing the said Office
delivered in to this Court a Report in Writing under their Hands
which was read in these Words.

To the Right Honble the Lord Mayor< no role > and Court of Aldermen.

In Obedience to an Order of this Court bearing date the
19th. day of July 1778 whereby it was referred to Us (amongst others) to
consider what shall be allowed the Keeper of Newgate for executing
the said Office We whose Names are hereunto Subscribed do hereby
Certify That we met for that purpose and have examined Mr Richard
Akerman touching the Fees taken by him a List of which We have
caused to be hereunto annexed as also concerning the Receipts and
Disbursements of the said Office and We are of Opinion that he shall
not raise the Rent of the Tap or suffer any Tap to be kept within the
Gaol except that in the Lodge nor the Drink to be sold there at any
higher prizes than in any other publick common All house and that
he shall keep and pay the said number of Turnkeys and Runners
as was kept in Mr Bolds time without his their or any other Person
or Persons exacting any thing from Prisoners or others by way of passing
Gigs or any other pretences whatsoever as also the usual Watch in the
Press Yard of 2 Runners every Night when there are any Prisoners
under sentence of Death and that he shall be obliged to keep the Bedding
and other Furniture and also the Irons in repair of which and any
thing else belonging to the said Gaol an Inventory shall be taken and
signed by him and left with the Town Clerk and shall so deliver up
the same and all other things belonging to the said Gaol at his
Surrender or other Avoidance of his said Office or his Heirs Executors or
Administrators in Case he shall dye in it and that he shall not take
any other Fees than what is mentioned in the above Table or such as
shall from time to time be allowed of by this Court and that he shall
