The Prisoner was committed to Newgate on the 23d. of January last charged
upon the Oaths of

for being Accessary after Fact that is to say
by relieving comforting and assisting one

feloniously assaulted
George Slater< no role >
on the Kings Highway in the County of the Town of Hull
on the
2d. January 1786 put him in Fear and Feloniously taken from his Person a certain Mail called the
Hull Mail in which Letters were sent and conveyed by the Post containing several Letters Packets
Bags and Mails of Letters See a Copy of the Committment annexed.
The said John Lake< no role >
was at the same time Committed to the said Goal of Newgate
For
the said Felony but is since dead in that Prison previous to his being tried
Upon Apprehending the Prisoner there were found upon him a Silver Watch
a Lincoln Bank Note For £10,,0,,0 and a Hull Bank Note for Nine Guineas and Nine
Guineas and 13s/6d in Money.
The Watch was Purchased by the Prisoner of one John Morritt< no role >
a Pawn broker
in Aldersgate

in Paymt. for which he gave a Bill of Exchange for £25. Dated Sheffield Decr. 10. 1785

upon Messrs. R. and J. Harrison London Payable to Messrs. Stainforth and
Haystrop or Order and by them indorsed thus. "Pay the Contents to Mr. Wm. Holmes< no role >
or Order Value
"in Accot. with Stainforth and Haystrop or Order"
The Bill was sent in a Letter by the Post from Messrs. Stainforth and Haystrop of Sheffield
to Mr. Wm. Holmes< no role >
of Hull (to whom the Bill is endorsed Payable) on the 3st. Decr. last, and was
in the Mail at the time it was robbed
The Lincoln Bank Note of £10. and the Hull Bank of Nine Guineas were also
in the Mail at the time that it was robbed.
As the Principal is dead Previous to his Tryal no Prosecution can be carried on against the
Accessary, and therefore you will Please to move the Court that he may be discharged out of Custody,
and that the Watch may be delivered up to Mr. Morritt, who has not been able to obtain Payment
of the Bill by reason of its not having been indorsed by Mr. Wm. Holmes< no role >
to whom it was made payable
It will be necessary to ask the Direction of the Court that the Lincoln Bank Note of
£10and the Hull Bank Note of Nine Guineas may be retained ny Mr. Parkin Soliciter to
the Post Office in Order to be restored to the Owners.
