Middlesex


The Several Informations of John
Hayes
< no role > and John Rushton< no role > Taken and made
on Oath before me one of his Majesty's Justices of
the peace for the said County of Middlesex
the 1st. day of December 1783

And first this Informant John Hayes< no role > for himself
Saith that he is a Book sellar and lives in High Holborn
That on friday Evening last some person or persons privately
Stole from and out of his Shop One Volume of Hooks
History of Rome and Five Volumes of Cireros Works
That the Books now produced are his property and the
Identical Books That were Stolen out of her Shop as
aforesaid

And this Informant John Rushton< no role > for himself
Saith That about the hour of ½ past 10 o Clock on Saturday
Morning last Two Men came to his Shop in Middle Row
Saint Giles in the fields and offered him for Sale One
Volume of Hookes History of Rome for which this Informant
gave One Shilling and Six pence That the said Two
men acquainted this Informant They had some more
Book of Sell and asked this Informant if he would buy
them which this agreed to provided he liked them
That they then went away in order to fetch the said
Books and in the meant time the abovenamed John Hayes< no role >
came to this Informants Shop and acquainted him
he had lost some Books and therefore when the said
Two Men came back again to his Shop [..] with the Books
(which they did in a short time afterwards and Offered him
the 5 Books now produced for half a Guinea) this
Informant sent for a peace Officer and had them taken
into Custody That they say their Names are James Johnson< no role >
and David Bermingham< no role >
