entitled to attention


populous City in an advanced state of Society and
Civilization, the Calamities and infirmity of human
nature must require continued axertion to counter act the
corruption of manners, and the prevalence fo View and
idleness.That there is however one Class of unhappy
Lads who have pecullar Claims on such an establishment
the Apprentices of Chimney Sweepers whose Apprenticeships
and means of livelihood cease at the Age of Sixteen Years
when they become unfitted by their Size, for the only
employment they have been taught, and are in too many
instances, driven to a Profligater, and Vicious course of
life, by the want not only of education and Protection but of
the mere necessaries of life.

That, as to Girls wo may be intitled to protection
and employment by this Charity, a greater difficulty
may attend the placing them out in the world, but that
the establishment of a Spinning, Knitting and Serving
School for supplying the different Persons on the
establishment, and those in Bethlem Hospital, or any
other Charity, and also for selling to the Poor at a
reduced Price, not only warse linen and hose, but all
the common and necessary Articles of Women's Dress,
and the appropriation of a limited Part of the Revenues
of the Hospital in the support of such an establishment
would be beneficial to the community. and at the same
time conformable to the intentions expressed in the
original documents respecting Bridewell.That the
produce of the work of such a School would not be
inconsiderable, it appearing by the Statement of one of
he Members of the Committee that the average
produce of the Serving Work of the elder. Girls at the
Foundling Hospital whose Ages were from eleven to
fourteen years) was in the Year 1797 on an average
