Upon reading the Humble petition of Richard Harvey< no role > Tenant of Barston Farm
in Kent part of the possessions of Bethlem Hospital Setting forthThat the petitioner
Agreed to take a Lease of the said Farm with usual Covenants for Twenty one Years
from Michas one thousand Seven hundred and Forty five at the same Yearly Rent of
Eighty pounds as was paid by Nathaniel Allen< no role > who was then on Occupation thereof
That the petitioner Agreed toke the said Allens Ulensilles and Stock in Husbandry
as the same should be appraised and the said Allens Circumstances being Low he was
very pressing with the petitioner to take possession and pay him the Appraised Value
of the stock and Assured the petitioner the premisses were in good repair And that
Notwithstanding the Common Covenants in the Lease for repairs when any thing
Extraordinary was to be done the Governors always made handsome Allowances
That Depending upon Allens said Information the petitioner did not look so
Carefully as he should have done into the Condition of the Buildings which Appeared
putty well on the Outside but two of the Barn's being almost full of born which
Allen was Allowed to keep these till he could Conveniently Sell it, The petitioner
could not possibly see the Defech which afterwards appearedThat since
removeing the said Cornand Examining more particularly the petitioner finds
two of the Barn's and the Stable to be very much out of repair and the Roof of the
stable is fallen in and the foundation of the stack of Chimneys in the House and
a Wall Adjoyning to them have lately given way and must be rebuilt and the Tiling
of the House is also greatly out of repairThat the Charges of the above
Mentioned repairs besides rough Timber to be Allowed will amount to one
hundred and seven pounds Twelve shillings and with Seventeen pounds which the
petitioner has already Disbursed in repairs makes in all one hundred and Twenty
four pounds twelve shillings, as appears by an Estimate made by the
workmenThat if the petitioner had known the true State and Condition of the said
Buildings he would not have Agreed to take a Lease without an Allowance for putting the
promisses into such repair as the late Tenant ought to have left themAnd praying the
Governors to take his Case into Consideration and to make linnan Allowance
for the said repairs the petitioner being willing to bear one third part of what the
said repairs already done and Necessary to be done shall amount to rough Timber
being Allowed by the Governors as usualIt is Ordered that the said
Petition be referred to the Committee of this House to make the said Richard Harvey< no role >
such Allowance as they shall think proper and report the same to the Court,
