relative to the Settlement of Martha Pickett< no role > Singlewoman

Brief for the Appellts.
By Pass Warrant or Order of Removal under the Hands and Seals of Wm: Blackmore< no role > Esqr. and Herbert Mayo< no role > D: D: two of his Mates
Justices of the Peace acting in & for the Co. of Middx assd. (one whereof being of the Quorum) bearing date the 10 day of June 1784 Martha Pickett< no role >
Singlewoman was removed and conveyed from & out of the said Psh of St. Geo: to the said Parish of St. Botolph Aldgate as the Place of
the last legal Settlement of the said Martha Pickett< no role > .

Against which sd. Pass Warrt. or Order of Removal the said Psh of Aldgate have appealed to the ensuing Genl. Quarter Session
of the Peace at the Session House for the sd. Co. of Middx

The Appellants Case

The said Pauper on her late Examn: by the Parish Officers of Aldgate in Consequence of her having been Passed as
afsd.declared That she is a Singlewoman aged between 18 and 19 Years, is the Daur of John Pickett< no role > late of the sd. Parish
of St. George in Middx Mariner deced

That (as she hath been informed by her Mother Margaret Pickett< no role > & believes) her said Father was an Housekeeper
in Bride Street in the sd. lastmentd. Psh for upwards of 30 Years that although his Rent was but £5 per Ann. Yet he
Paid sevl. Taxes, particularly the Land TaxThat he died in said House about 9 Years ago & the Paupers said
Mother after his Death continued in his said House & Paid the Land Tax,That about 4 Yrs. ago she quitted said
House and has for a consble Time past been in the Workhouse belonging to the sd. Psh of St. George and is
now maintained thereinThat the said Pauper was born in her said Mothers House in Bird street, was
never bound Apprentice nor at Service in any one Place for the Space of 12 Mos.That she always lived
with her saidMotherFather and Mother in the aforementd. House whilst her Father was living and
afterwards with her Mother whilst she continued therein except when at Service or with a Mrs. Price
herein after mentd. That about 7 Yrs. ago her said Mother agreed with Mrs. Ann Price< no role > a Lodger in th [..] King
Court in the Minories in the said Parish of Aldgate to learn her (said Pauper Martha) to make gold and silver
thread Buttons and gave her as a Consideration therefore 5 Guas. and the said Pauper was to live with her
for four Years and be provided with Lodging and Board, and a Memdum or Agreement wrote on a common
Street of unstamped Paper was signed by them both, but not by the Pauper, which Memdum or Agreemt. said
Mrs. Price kept and Paupers Mother had not any copy of itThe Pauper further says that she accordingly
went and lived with said Mrs. Price in her said Lodging in the Minories for the Space of 1 Year & 11 Months
& then said Price ran away from her Lodgings leaving the Pauper who thereupon went back to her said
Mother in Bird Street and has not gained any Settlement elsewhere

However whether the Paupers Settlement be in Saint George's Parish or elsewhere we apprehend it
does not lay with the Parish of Aldgate to prove the same but that it is incumbent on the Parish of Saint
George to support their own Order of Removal by proving the Paupers Settlemt. to be in the Parish of
Aldgate which we conceive cannot be done under or any ways relating to the Agreement between the
Paupers Mother and said Mrs. Price, or the Paupers living with Mrs. Price in Consequence thereof
as stated in the Brief.

We Shall produce the Pauper and have supa [..] d her Mother the said Margaret
Pickett
< no role > .
