The Number of Prisoners in this space is abt. 1180.
Therefore the trifling number of Deaths is J Beach
only one in 62-notwithstanding an in-
stance of a Mortality of 28. of them in the space
of 11 days.
Further on is an Accot. for ten year's which does not much ex [..] this proportion

The Inquiry is whether by violent
Death on hard usage of Gaol therefore
proper in all Cases to go to the Place
before body removed-'tis the essential
part of the Enquiry.

He's of a very delicate Constitution
and has not had small pox therefore
timerous

This a very random account. and if
all Circumstances impartially collected
might be well Accounted for by the
poor State, & assistance but things
seem to be thrown in in a lump to knock
down the Gaol.

Built about the year 1730. for condemn'd prisrs

So it might into a new Gaol

He before says the Distemper is all over
the Gaol and not in one particular room
or place.

Which is the Dampress complain'd of as
the Cause of the evil. and a little further 'tis admitted
that with a proper number of people it might be
[..] prevented why then can't the Keeper see that the prisr [..]

An Accot. of Inquisitions (took an [..]

had small pox.50
always goes into Appartmts. of Gaol in Cases of Violent Death
If Natural are brot. out.

In 1763. took Inqrs. of 11. in 2 Days Might not this Calamity be owing
a prisoners being brought in with
a contagious Distemper he thinks otherwise whom
he thos. dyed of Gaol Distemper

Thinks the Distemper How is this accounted for unless it be
that there's a neate number of Prisrs than
in many other Gaols. more there than in
other Gaols-several died in New Gaol
brot. from Newgate thot. they caught it
in Newgate-has been ill himself
going to Newgate . It smells very bad
thinks the Cause of those dying in 1763.
was from fulness & Closeness of Gaol

Akerman-Accot. of Deaths from 1758-83

The prison is clean'd daily in difft. pari [..]
Don't know the persons dy'd of ye Gaol
distemper dyed of a fever 52

Cellsofhave been between built 30 & 40 yrs.
admits the distemper may be brot. into
the Gaol.

[..] Not so Close in Cells & fewer
is number therefore may not be so bad
Frequently carry disorder from other part
to cells

Some part or other clean'd every Day
The Scavenger when there's a load cons

Believes the running ever occassions

and naturally enough to the
little Care taken of the privies

Again if this be the Case, they will
be equally unwholsome noy some &
infections in a New Gaol-but it's
plain the prison has not been kept
Clean from Filth and why?
Q.

One very good reason why the County
prisoners shod. not be carried thither
till Gaol Delivery comes on-and by
that means more than one half need
not go into Gaol at all; being acqd. on
discharged without Tryal.

Try it then
before build a New Gaol}

This must be either from the Area, the
cleanliness of the Prisoners there confined
Or from the place itself being cleaner kept
to invite on thither for in other respects
his equally subject to infection as being a part of
the Gaol in which he says the Distemper
is not confined to any one part

Then the [..] evil will not be
removed because always crowed night
The Session time-Which makes it reasona-
ble to have 2 Capital prisons seperate
& district in so populous a City & County
without crowding the Prisoner altogr. at
the approach of Sessions

How taken Notice the Walls are very bad
the Inside, owing to the gt. time it has
been built, some decayd & some may
stand agt. number of years 53

Admits with a proper number of
people the Boghouses may be kept
clean but don't know when 'tis
necessary till they run ever Imagines
he Could not keep the Prisoners who Gone
but could keep the Prison clean from Filth
don't think cod. make it wholsome

From the number of prs and con-
finemt. of the buildg it will make
it unwholsome if ever so clean

Is of opinion that any other Gaol
so badly constructed without an Area
would be unwholsome when full 54

By an Area means a free passage &
open yard & draught of air thro'
the rooms-believes if an Area
for the Prisrs twod. be much better

Those who pay for the benefit of
the press yard one better in breath
in proportion

So he before says of the Debtors side Never had debtors side so full
but it would hold more, but where
full now sickly & more die than
in proportion

If a New Gaol people might be
unhealthy if more in it than if a
few-a New Gaol might be much
better contrived.55
