Middlesex and also the Petition of the Grand
Jury of the County of Middlesex the
Church Wardens and Overseers of the poor
and other principal Inhabitants of the
several Parishes within the Hundred of
Ossulton whose Names are thereunto
subscribed on behalf of themselves and
the rest of the Inhabitants of the same
Parishes, were severally referred have
pursuant to the Order of the House Examined
the matters of the said Petitions

And to prove the Allegations of the first
mentioned petition.

Mr. Thomas Ford< no role > clerk of the Arraigns for the City
of London said That the Gaol of Newgate is in the
liberty of the City, and he believes no part of it in the
{County of Middlesex -That the Sherrifs of London
and Middlesex appoint the Keeper of Newgate
and that he gives them Security-That it is the
Common Gaol for the City and County of Middlesex
tho'there are other Gaols, [..] in the City & to to which Justices of the
peace commit prisoners Vizt. New prison the
Gatehouse Tothill Fields Bridewell and Clerkenwell

Bridewell which are reparied by the County that the Justices
of the peace for the County Commit to New prison and
Clerkenwell and the Westminster Justices to Tothill
Fields Bridewell and the Gate House and that the
Felons committed to the Gaols are brought to Newgate
Six Days before each Session and that he believes the
Middlesex prisoners committed in this manner are
three to one committed Originally to Newgate-But

{that he think severy Felon ought to be committed to
the County Gaol and that it is matter of favour to
commit them to any other.

In further proof that support of the allegation that the Gaol
of Newgate is the Common Gaol of the City of London
and County of Middlesex the following Extracts from
the Charter of the New prison which bears date 10th.
August 17 Ja. 1st. which was laid before your
Committee in pursuance of their Order for that purpose
was Read.
