Not very often for the Court of
Aldermen & Sheriffs are very
attentive to that Contract

More are discharged in a day or two
or removed to Fleet or Kings Bench
Because of the detested name of the Gaol.

Still he has fees for Debtors & for Libty of
Press yard Etc.

His Salary of £13. P Ann working it comenced in 1756.

The Masters side Debtors will alone hold 30.

Many Dark Stair cases is private Houses.

Prisoners for Transportation are taken away
of 4 Stated times in the year24

remain from 2 to 3 Months-It often
happens that they wait a 3d Session24

Middxprisoners forDebtors remain

Believes [..] Middx Debtors from 15. & 20
to one of London Drs.

Average the year thro' upon the whole
prisrs Midd. 3 & 4 to 1. of London

City allow £200. P ann in lieu of Fees 24

produced accot. of Comitments from 1753.

Prisoners from all parts of the kingd. includ.
Kept no accot. of proportoins

Ten or 12. a year only comitted by Ha Cor.
a few for Debts to the Crown some by Ha
and some by wit from Sheriff of Middx

Many Debtors (but not Majority) Elmove themselves from
Newgate immediately

Have a constant succession of Middx Pe [..]
Debtors in execution have a right to sue for
their groats, but allowd. not abated for the [..] 27

Gaol is very old
no open area that there may be a free pass
of Air to the Cells & Wards

Some Wards light-in gennal Dark

Felons Side &
Comon Side Debtors}
Dark obliged to use
links & buiners to go
up & down.

Middx Debtors (Mars side) One Window in each Ward
no yard.

Comon side not so light two links &
Burners to go up & down Stairs 28

Felons Side the same exceptm. press yard
theres a little light in one Stair case

There's a piece of Ground on the West side the Gaol at the upper end of
Old Bailey about 70 yards in length and a good
Width, belonging to the City on which an area
hath been proposed to be made and in the
front of this Ground there's a Middle Row of
Buildings which the City are impowerd to
remove-N B. the press yard is on the
East Side and has tolerable Air considering
it a Gaol.

By this means the more healthy part of
Gaol is generally unoccupied.

About the year 1728 the City took some Ground
or Old Buildg adjoyning east to the press yard of Newgate
and thereon built Cells and besides these a House
for the Ordinary, and also some appartments which
to reimburse themselves they let out again to the
Keeper vid Accot. Mark'd (I)

2. is not this a Contradictionr. for it
seems agreed that cleanliness is ever
sought, for avoiding Contagion and the
report of their own comittee Speaks it
And in Order, toKeep 'emclean distribute 'em
and does so when sick

This seems a contradiction of the fore-
going assertion

universally so in all
places

This assertion alone sufficient
to deter the parties from Curying
£50,000 in any part of the City or Subs.
now so environ'd with Buildings.

Formerly keepers pd. for Ordinary Repairs

This seems to have been a materials [..]
[..] Complaint and engaged the Attention of the [..]

not any place where prisoners may air
themselves-In press yard a place abt.
6. feet Wide & 40 long28

This Distinction seems to be the bane of the Prison. If pay may go into Rooms in press yard
there aid abt. 16 or 17. rooms-will hold 3
on 4 Psons each.

It agt. Many Prisoners all the apartmts.
are used, if a few, keep them in lower
part of Gaol for security

Pays City £30. a year, City pay £50. 29:
All the rooms in the upper part are fitted
up & ready for reception of Prisrs.

Never had so many but room suffict.
but when agt. member Gaol is sickly
from smallness of the space of Ground,
the Want of an Area & free circulation

If Prisrs distributed in the rooms of
the press yard as well as other parts
dont imagine but would be as sickly.

When I have an oppertunity I distribute
'em when sick

Gaol most sickly when full In the
{Middle of Winter & in damp weather &
Middle of Summer they are most so 30

Apprehends sickness may in part proceed
from the Situation of Newgate in the Middle
of the Town & part from being so irregular
Built & want of air.

Lets not above 1 or 2. rooms in upper
part of Gaol on Mar. side felons & about
2 on Drs.

have frequently had prisoners if they wod.
have paid me I could not trust.

Being askd at whose expence Gaol is
clean'd I pay scavenger for taking dirt
got together by Sweeping & Scraping-I pay
for no repaire

Clearing Boghouses are pd. for by City
they frequently run over.30
