February 1799. -

"the Cell where Burks was No.. 1. 3 feet wide by 2 feet 6.
"with inside Shutters to open and shut at the Prisoners
"pleasure these Windows are what he Calls a Hole in the
"Wall he has never been ill that I know of since he has
"been in the Prison except as before mentioned and went
"out in perfect health and when he was Discharged he
"thanked me for the kindness I had shewn him when
"he was Examined before the Committee he made no
"Complaint of the nature stated in his Affidavit he never
"was called upon to Sing in the Chapel that is always
"optional but the reason of his not being permitted to go
"into the Chapel after he had been in the Prison sometime
"was on Account of improper behaviour for Laughing
"and noding to Smith and otherwise misbehaving
"Mr.. Evans the Chaplain informed me of their
"improper Conduct in Consequence of which I spoke
"to them respecting their behaviour and said I thought
"they would have known better being Men of superior
"Education to most in the Chapel and they were setting
"a very bad Example and that a Man must be very
"wicked indeed to behave so in the Chapel but that it
"appeared to me they went there more to redicule
"than for any other purpose in Answer to which
"Smith said he did not believe half he heard in the
"Chapel and as to the Scripture he did not believe any
"part of it, I said if those are your sentiments I will
"take Care you shall not go to the Chapel any more they
"both said they did not wish to go, I communicated
"what had passed to Mr.. Evans the Chaplain and he
"was of Opinion with me it would be most proper not to
"take them into the Chapel again

"And Your said Committee further Report That
"Mr.. Aris produced a Letter received by him in the Prison
"from Burks of which the following is a Copy.
