"Sir

"Agreeably to what I am informed is
"the Regulation of this Prison I have enclosed the Letter I
"intended to send to my Counsel who Defended me in the
"Action brought against me by the King for a Libel, of which
"I knew not the Contents, I am always willing. Sir, to
"Comply with any Rules and Orders where they are not
"unreasonable and severe and I am certain the native
"Goodness of your Character will never allow you to
"require any other, I can assure you Sir, in a recent
"instance nothing less than the most imperious necessity
"would have inclined me to have transgressed them, I
"abominate Artifice yet my Situation compelled me to adopt
"a Conduct, I can scurcely defend evers to myself it is alone
"from the Plea at which I have hinted I can derive any
"benefit you may be assured Sir I shall feel myself bound
"in honor not to violate any branch of my Duty as a
"Prisoner again, If I complain at any time I mean
"not (and I have never failed to express it to my Friends
"any Ground of Complaint of you Sir or any of the
"Persons who are employed in the Administration of the
"Concerns of the Prison I am Convinced that you Act
"with the atmost impartiality and whatever In cowen-
"iencies are experienced by the Prisoners are not at all
"to be ascribed to yourself placed in a Responsible Situation
"I am not Ignorant that you Act officially only and
"where invested with a discretionary power it is always
"exerted on the side of Lenity and tenderness I owe
"this Acknowledgement to you Sir for the trouble I have
"given you and the favours you have granted and as
"the only Apology I can make for having acted improperly
