February 1799.

"Days after he came in, he never Complained to me of being
"struck by a Turnkey except that I remember a dispute
"once between one of the Turnkeys and Burks where the
"Turnkey thought something was Secreted in some Linnen
"brought to him and upon the Turnkey's insisting upon
"Examining it a scuffle ensued between them when Burks
"struck the Turnkey and he gave him a blow or two in
"return nor do I believe any such thing ever was done
"and I verily believe the Surly brutal manner in which
"he describes himself to have been treated by the Turnkey
"is equally untrue, they know they are not Allowed to
"treat the Prisoners improperly in any respect, the
"Method of Distributing the Loaves is, the Person whose
"business it is goes round the Prison with a Basket and
"delivers into every Prisoners hands a Loaf if he
"chuses to receive it if not it is laid down for him the
"Loaves are Weighed every Day when they are delivered
"by the Baker and are as near a pound as possible
"they may sometime's be an Ounce or so under but
"they are quite as often as much over the Baker is by
"his Contract with the Magistrates to deliver Loaves of
"One pound each; - Burks always had on the Meat
"day's as near 8"z.. of Meat as possible as frequently
"something more, as less, besides a Quart of Soup or broth
"well made of Meat Vegitables and Oatmeal for more
"than 12. Months, he had besides Tea, Sugar and butter
"regularly brought to him twice a Week and now and
"then Meat the Surgeon having given permission
"for that indulgence, I never saw a floor of any
"of the Cells Crusted over with Ice, as described in the
"Printed Paper, since the Prison has been built it is
"impossible nor are the Walls ever Covered with Moisture
"as stated, - The Walls of the Cells are as Dry as this Room and
"were the Cells larger they would be much Colder and less
"Comfortable than they are, there were two Windows in
