May 1799.

The said Committee Report.

That they proceeded to Examine several
Bills and Demands for various Articles for the House
of Correction amounting to the sum of £891..3s..2d.
when it appeared by the Examination of Mr.. Aris the
Governor that he had not Ordered or Inspected the several
Articles charged for in a Bill of Hattam and Martin
amounting to £86..3s..11d. for Ironmongery Goods but
had Certified the same to have been delivered upon the
Assertion only of Edward Berry< no role > the Smith it also appeared
by the Examination of Berry the Smith that he had Ordered
the several Articles charged for in the said Bill at his
own discretion without any Authority from the
Governor or any one else and also that there was at
this time Another Bill due to Hattam and Martin
for similar Articles and for which no Voucher or
Authority could be produced or Account given other
than what could be Collected from the Memory of the
said Berry.

And Your Committee further Report
That it appearing by the Examination of Mr.. Aris that
500lbs.. weight of Soap charged for in the Bill of Timothy
Smith amounting to £46..15s..11d. kept in the Governors
house in a Box under the Care of his Housekeeper that
she delivered it as it was called for to Keys one of the
Survants in the Prison to take it to the female
Prisoners who are employed in Washing; - It is the
Opinion of Your Committee that the Governor should
appropriate a Room in the Prison for the purpose of depositing
the different Stores, that the Keys of such Room should be
kept by himself and no Article delivered therefrom but in
his presence

And Your said Committee further Report
That it appeared to them that no Books of Entry are kept in
this Prison of the several Articles which are Ordered for the
use of the Prisoners and that no Inspection or Entry is
