December 1798.

When it is Considered That a Prison that has
had only about 250. Prisoners which is nearly the
Average number which have been in the House
of Correction at one time in the last Year the
Expence will almost exceed belief it will appear
that the Charge upon the County amounts to about
£30. each Prisoner for Diet Cloaths Etc. Pr.. Annum
for each Prisoner and that that number is made
up of Men Women and some Children.

And the Committee express it with much
concern that they see no reason to expect that the
Expences of the present year for the House of
Correction will be less than the former year but
the Contrary is much to be feared.

The whole of the County Expences paid by
Mr.. Burchell the Treasurer in the last year (1797.)
were £16733..3s..8d. £7757..7s..5¼d. of which were
incurred by the various Charges on Account
of the House of Correction a Prison containing only
about 250. Prisoners Per Day Your Committee
regret the want of opportunity to go into a more
Minute Investigation of many particulars respecting
the House of Correction they have stated some of the
General outlines and pointed out some of the most
prominent Articles of Expence by which it will appear
how necessary it is to reduce as much as possible
with prudence and propriety the great charge of that
Prison on the County which the Committee beg leave
most earnestly to recommend to the serious Attention
and Consideration of the Court.

All which the Committee Submit Etc
