December 1798.

for the support of the Prisoners they have been led to inquire
what Allowance is made to the Prisoners in New Prison
and in Tothill fields Bridewell and they find that no
Allowance of Butchers Meat is provided by the County
for the Prisoners in New Prison but that the Prisoners
are permitted to receive Meat and other Provisions from
their Friends - That the same allowance of Bread is made
to the Prisoners in New Prison as in the House of Correction
but not to all the Servants and that the Bakers Bill for
the above time for New Prison was £42..7..4. That the
number of Prisoners from 11th. September to the 20th. Octr..
in that Prison was upon an Average each Day about
133. and that the Expence of Dieting them was less than 2d
Per. Day for each Prisoner except in some few Instances
when Butchers Meat has been Ordered for Sick Prisoners
by the Surgeon attending the Prison

Your Committee have also inquired what
Allowance of Provision is made to the Prisoners in
Tothill fields Bridewell and find that no Butchers Meat
is Allowed by the County or by the Magistrates of the
City and Liberty of Westminster but that the Prisoners
and permitted to receive Meat and other Provisions from
their friends as in New Prison and that a Person who
keeps a Chandlers Shop near the Prison attends every
Day at the Door and such Prisoners as have Money
are Allowed to purchase Cheese and Butter and any
little Article of that sort - That there was from 11th.
September to the 17th. October both inclusive 102. Prisoners
upon an Average each Day in that Prison that the
Bakers Bill< no role > for the above time Amounted to £30..16..0
each Prisoner being Allowed one pound of Bread Per
Day as in the other Prisons that the Expence to the
County of Dieting the Prisoners in that Prison was
