War Office 5th. April 1779
Sir
Having received a Letter from His Majestys Adjutant
General informing me that the Recruiting Bill, does not go on with that
Success in the County of Middlesex
that it at first met with, I take the
Liberty of sending You a Copy of it, & I trust that at the approaching Quarter
Sessions You will do way thing in Your power to induce the Magistrates
and Commissioners to Execute this Law with Zeal and Activity from
whence great benefit is Expected to be derived to the publick Service
I am
Sir
Your Obedient
Humble Servant
C: Jenkinson
Sir
John Hawkins< no role >
Chairman
of the Quarter Sessions of the
County of Middlesex
also the following Letter mentioned therein to be Enclosed
Copy
Sir
As the Recruiting Bill, in the County of Middx
, does not go on with
the Success it at first met with, & as the numbers hitherto drawn from
this County, are not so great, but it may be well Supposed there are still
remaining considerable numbers when searched for, that world properly
come under the Act: On this Consideration I beg leave to suggest the
necessity of recommending to the Commissioners every Exertion in their power
towards the forwarding of this essential Service
It is to be apprehended that a want of Exertion, in enforcing
the Act in this County, may induce many men from other Counties, to
take Shelter here when they find they can remain unmolested
Colonel Townshend being apprized of the Meetings will take
Care, that proper attendance shall be given
I have the honor Etc
W: Amherst Adjt, Genl:
Right Honble
