October 1778

Vagabonds do daily infest that part of the Hundred of Ossulston
within this County called the Tower Division and in Open defience
of Law have published and dispersed Advertisements and hand ws [..]
notifying their Intention to exhibit at the late Angel and Gown
Tavern in Whitechapel on Monday and also on Friday next certain
Plays or Interludes and other Dramatic Representations therein
Particularly mentioned, The Representation whereof will be greatly
detrimental and tend to the Corruption of Youth and of good mann [..]
This Court upon consideration of the premises doth for the
preventing such Mischiefs for the future order that the High Constable
of the said Division do Summon and take to this assistance the Several
Petty Constables and Headboroughs within the said Division (whom
this Court doth require to aid and assist him therein) or so many as he
shall think sufficient for this purpose and that he the said High
Constable together with Such Petty Constables and Headboroughs
whom he shall so take to his assistance do apprehend all and every
Players of Interludes and Actors of Plays or Drolls and other persons
who shall act Exhibit or Shew any such Interludes Plays or Drolls
in the Division aforesaid and that the said Petty Constables and
Headboroughs as Assistants to the said High Constable do carry all
and every person or persons so offending before one or more of his Majestys
Justices of the peace for the said County to the end that they may be
punished according to Law and for the more effectually suppressing
the Grievances aforesaid It is hereby Recommended unto his
Majestys Justices of the peace for this County residing in the Division
aforesaid or any two or more of them to meet together at Such place or
places in the Division aforesaid and at such time or times as they
shall in this behalf appoint in order to proceed against such offender
as shall be brought before them by the said High Constable or other
Peace Officers according to Law And the said High Constable and
other peace Officers are required to be aiding and assisting the said
Justices of the peace and to observe their Orders and directions for
the more effectually Suppressing and preventing the abuses
aforesaid

By adjournment Monday 19th. October

It is Ordered that William Snell< no role > Gentleman High Constable
of the Liberty of westminster in the said County do attend the Court hereon
Thursday the Twenty Second day of October Instant to Shew Cause why
he hath not levied and paid to the Treasurer the County Rate or
Assessment upon the Several Parishes and places within his District
and that the said High Constable do then Account for the same Rat [..]
before his Majestys Justices of the peace on the said Thursday as he will
answer for his further neglect at his Paul
