The Examination of Richard
Newton taken upon Oath the
2nd. Day of March 1786

Saith that he was born in the parish of Donnington
in the County of Hereford and brought up a Farmer and
Butcher , That he this Examinant left the Country about Two
or three Years ago, and when he came to Town he went to
live with one Beadle in Monkwell Street a Porter at Goldsmiths
Hall. That the first Place he this Examinant entered as a
Servant was with Mr. Heath and had a Character from the
said Beadle, That after living with the said Heath three
Months he went to Messieurs Tanfield and Company in
Foster Lane Ironmongers with whom he this Examinant
lived one Year and a half and had a Character from the
said Heath, That he this Examinant soon afterwards went
to Mr. Randall in Gracechurch Street & Trunk-maker
and Bear Merchant with whom he lived one Month
That he this Examinant after that event to lodge at the
Horse Shoe and had two Rooms there, and was out of
Place a Quarter of Alpar. That he this Examinant lived
with Mr. Yeates in Milk Street a Manchester Warehouse-
-man and that the said Mr. Yeates had this Examinant
Character of Messrs. Barker and Clare Grocers at the Top of
Fleet Street . That he this Examinant lived a Quarter of a
year with a Master Shoemaker in Cold Bath field so
That he this Examinant lodged about about Two Months
at No. 3 Manwell Street then went unto the Country when
he this Examinant stayed about Two Months and that
returned to his last mentioned Lodgings. That he this
Examinant has known Mr. Gould for the Space of Twelve
Months last past and had seen the said Gould drinking
at the Horse Shoe aforesaid and has seen his fellow Servant
