Taken this 2d. Day of March 1789 before us Two
of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace in and for the said County
Who being uponOath saith their Oaths Severally Say and the said John
Jones< no role >
for himself first Smith. That being on his duty (as one of
the Watchmen
of the Parish of Saint Ann
aforesaid) between
four and five O Clock their Morning he Stopt the person present
who Says his Name is George Martin< no role >
having the Rope now
produced in his Possession on suspicion that he had Stolen the
same and upon his asking him how he came by said Rope he
told Informant that a Boatswain of a Ship gave it to him in
Blackwatt Yard last night whereupon Informant sayed to him
what on Sunday night. said Martin then sayed to Informant
he was a poor Old Man desired him to take the property and let him
go but Informant not being Satisfied with this Account he
Secured said Martin and Rope and took him him to Somehouse
Watch House. And the said Richard Hanks< no role >

that the Rope now produced is his property and was Stolen
from some Rafts of Timber lying near the Gut House at Poplar
since three O Clock Yesterday afternoonWilliam Mills< no role >
