The Information of Elizabeth Thompson< no role > of Wentworth Street Whitechapel
Widow and Elizabeth Pugh< no role > of the same place Widow taken this
13 day of Aug 1788 Before me John Staples< no role > Esqr One of His Majesty's Justices
of the Peace in and for the said County who being on Oath say And first the
said Elizabeth Thompson< no role > on her Oath saith she [..] taken in person to
lodge in her said house And that on Monday night last the 11th Instant between
the hours of Eleven and twelve The person present who says his name is Richard
Smith
< no role > came and asked her to let lodge there which she refusedandhe went away
and returned in about a Quarter of an hour and agreed to lay with another man
and pay Three penceThat Elizabeth Pugh< no role > came in took of her her Clock and laid it on
the Table where they were says Richard Smith< no role > paid her this Informant for his Lodging
he standing fronting her with his Back to the Table drunked his Gin run out immediately
and never returned saying he would go and fetch some beer Says Elizabeth Pugh< no role > instantly
said he had taken her cloak and run out to endeavour to secure him That he hath
not a Doubt the said Richard Smith< no role > [..] Stole said Cloak There being no other person in her
said house near Elizabeth Pugh< no role > on her oath saith on Monday Evening the 11th Aug
Instant between the hours of Eleven and twelve she went to her Lodgings as aforesaid where she
saw Richard Smith< no role > pay Mrs. Thompson for his lodgingThat she pulled her Black silk mode cloak
of which she Values at Ten Shillings and laid it on the Table went and fetched some Gin which they
drank That Richard Smith< no role > stood with his back toward the said Table saying he would go and fetch a pot
of Bear that he immediately went away and before he could be clear of the fore door she missed her
Cloak and went in the neighbourhood to see if she could find him that she did notand as these
were only themselves she has not a Doubt but the said Richard stole her said Cloak

away after paying for his lodging was that he went to the sign of the Black Swan
in Wentworth Street for a pint of Beer that having got too much in his head was the
Reason he did not lay at Mrs. Thompson
