at No. 12 Shakespear Walk Shadwell taken this 23rd day of Oct 1786 before me John Staples< no role > Esqr
One of His Majestys Justices of the Peace in and for the said County Who being on Oath
Say and first The said George Strutchfield< no role > on his Oath says about The hour of Ten on
Saturday night last he Moored his Boat with the had fast and Padlock produced to
an Iron Ring fast to New Crane Stairs Shadwell for safety [..] to be easily come at High
water about the hour of Two the same night to go to move a Lighter lying in Hanover
hole from thence to Limehouse hole Says himself and others having had their
Boats frequently taken in the night from their moorings and made use off
to rob Snips or Vessels He with the said John Walter< no role > , John Legon< no role > , John Jefferys< no role >
Benjamin Shaw< no role > William Maplestone< no role > , John Thomas Legon< no role > , and Peter Constable< no role >
agreed to Watch their Boats on the said nightThat all of them count Peter Constable< no role > were in a boat
of the said John Walter< no role > a Little below the said Stairs and the said Peter Constable< no role >
was in about above the said Stairs in Order to give notice if any of the Boats
belonging to Waterman who ply at the said Stairs were taken awayThat between
the Hours of Twelve and one the same night They saw a Boat coming out from
the said stairs which Boat they pursed and Overtook the said Boat between the Tier
of Ships which lye off New Crane Stairs and King Edward Stairs . which Boat
proved to be his own boat that he had moored as aforesaid and The Four men now
present who say their names areJohn Charles Riley< no role > Thomas Butler< no role > , Samuel Williams< no role > and
John Lacey< no role > inthethis said boat and likewise found that his took rope which he had locked as
aforesaid had been cut further says he saw the Knife produced taken from One of the Prisoners
which knife appears to him to have been used in Cutting the said Rope further says when
they come up with the said Boat one of them said the boat was his
William Negus< no role > on his Oath says about the Hour of Twelve on Saturday night last
as he was in his Watch box in New Gravel Lane Shadwell he saw the Prisoners present come down
the said Lane One of them having a pair of Skulls on his Shoulder all of them going
toward New Crane Stairs which is about the Distance of Seventy or Eighty Yard
from where he was in his said Box
