have advanced the Money, when to Informants great Surprize Mr.
Newton the entering Clerk asked what business Mr. Lauries Name
had to the Certificate, for that Lieutenant John Campbell< no role > so described
had long employed Mr. David Thomas< no role > as his Agent, and that there
was no other Person of that Name and Description in the Books
of the Office, and that he was then in Scotland, as it appeared
by a Letter received from him latelythat Informant upon
searching and examining many Books, and no such Person
being to be found,informanthe returned home, and charged
Campbell with it, who said, that it was a Mistake, which he
would prove, but [..] went off, and never came near Informant
morethat said Darby seemed much hurt at Informants having
made Esquiries at Grays and believes, Lauries, and the Pay
Office; saying to Informant Good God, what doubts can
you now have, after any bringing Lauries Certificate;
would he have signed it, unless he had his Agency and known him
to have been the Officer so described on half paybesides
there is a Ballance due to Laurie of eighteen pence or
thereabouts which Laurie said he might call and pay him
when he liked, for he knew him to be a young Man of Street
honour, that the Pay Office Books were very often incorrect and
then fussed again, that we might go into the City and receive the
Cash, for that he, said Darby, was to have some of it until
his own could be got ready and that after that all Mistakes
should be rectified, but said Campbell never returned and said
Darby said that he had sent him a little way out of Town
for fear Informant should take him upand [..] and take him
