Middlesex to wit

The Information of Humphry
Stokes
< no role > taken before ustwo
three of his Majestys Justices of the
peace for the said County

Who being upon Oath saith that on
Saturday Evening the 19th. of March
instant between Seven and Eight oClock
he was on board the Brig Joseph Captain
Stokes then lying upon the navigable River
Thames near Rotherhith in the County
of Surry when wanting to come on Shore
in order to go home to his Lodgings he
Ordered a Boat to be called from the
accordingly was done and this Informt.
got in to it and was proceeding [..] towards
the North Shore when another Boat containing
five or Six Men therein rowed along
side this Informtt. Boat which was in the Middlesex side of the River when one of
the men in the said Boat demanded
his Mony by saying Damn Your
Eyes deliver your Mony and this
you danmed first when directly a Pistol
was fired at him and set fire to the
Bosom of his Shirt Coat waistcoat
and burnt his face upon which this
Informant called out Murder and
theives and Immediately the waterman
that had been called from the Shore to
take him from the Ship as aforesaid
took his Watchanda box and a sch of China
