Taken this 31. Day of May 1783 before us two
of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace
in and for the said County
Who being upon Oath Saith that as he was coming up Mile End Road
near
the King Harrys head a little after four OClock this Morning
he saw Richard Williams< no role >
a prisoner now here present follow
a Cart (which he has since learned is the property of Mr.
Edward Smith< no role >
of Leding Kuding in Essex) about Eight Rod
during which time he looked on Each side of the said Cart
as also before and behind to Observeif any person was near him but
Seeing no person he immediately went and Cut a Basket
Containing fourteen Chickens (now here produced) from
behind the said Cart. That after he had so done this

and John Walker< no role >
(also now present) come from the foot
Path on the left hand side and Joined the said Williams
when he saw Williams take the Basket put it on his
head and then they all went away together and turned
down White horse Lane. Whereupon Informant called or
gave Notice to the Watchmen in Consequence whereof
they were all four soon after apprehended, with the said
Basket and Chicken [..] in their Possession
