The Examination of James
Sampson

8th. day of March 1768

This Examinant says that on Tuesday last about
seven of the Clock he went to General Conway's
that he went into the Steward's Room that he there
drank [..] Tea with Mrs. Mathews Mr. Leauzun
and his Wife that he afterwards Played at Cards
and staid with then until nine o'Clock says there
was another Woman there who was a Stranger
to him that he went out of the Room about nine and
left them all these, that he then went up the back Stair
into an empty Room called Mr. Smith's Room that
he said there from about nine in the Evening
until two in the Morning says he then pulled
his shoes off went down Stairs and Lighted a Candle
which he brought from home in his Pocket (for
that purpose) at the Hall Firer then went directly
into the Library and tried the Drawers of the
writing Table that he found one of the Drawers
open in which were several Bank Notes that
is to say six Vizr. one for five hundred pounds
four of One hundred each and one for Twenty
five pounds all which he took away says that
he then put some papers round the Lighted
Candle upon the Table and left the room
the papers being then on fire says he then went out of the house and got over
the Yard Wall at one corner into the Alley
leaving the Hall door open says he staid near
an hour about the house and then went home
