Apprentices disorders Reported


Upon Reading a Report from the Comittee of this House dated
the 11th. day of November Instant 1755 under the hands of Mr. George
Wyld

This Comittee In Pursuance of an Order of Court the 11th. of
September last being called to Examine into the Disorder's Said to
have been Comitted by Several of the Apprentices in this Hospital
at Bartholomew fair on the 4th. of Septr. lastThey have had Several
Meetings Viz. the 9th. 16. & 24 of Octr. last the 5th. of Novr. instant & this
day And upon Examination of Brown, Fitch & How, Beadles and
Several of the Apprentices it Appeared to the ComitteeThat
on the 4 of Sept. in the Evening a Person came to this Hospital &
Acquainted one of the Beadles that Sevl. of the Apprentices were at
Bartholomew fair makeing a Riot upon which the 3 Beadles Imediately
went thither where they found about 16 of the Apprentices & Admonished
them to return homeThat Thomas Caines< no role > (Apprentice to Keil) who
is since run away broke Fitch the Beadles head and Knoc't him down upon
his Asking him what he did with a Bludgeon in his handThat another
of 'em Struck How the Beadle on the Wrist & Arm which Swelled very
much but he cou'd not tell who it wasThat a Person was beat & abused
by Edward Brookes< no role > who was bound Apprentice to John Burnham< no role > since
deced but who the Person was the Comittee cou'd not discoverThat
Sevl. of the Apprentices got out by a Rope from the Window of a Room
3 Stories high in Occupation of Mr. Dell which had only one Upright
barr in it and was part of the late Appartment of Fitch the Beadle
And some got out of their Mastors Shop Windows 4 Stories high
And that one Francis Feilder< no role > who Served his Apprenticeship to
(John Burnhann< no role > deced) was therein the Hospital Cloathing (which he
said was his own) & is now a Soldier And the Comittee being
Informed that Mr. Tomkins a Poulterer and Mr. Somner a Serjeant in the
Guards Attended with a Complaint against Some of the Apprentices for
making a Riot and Assaulting them at Borough fair in Southwark they
were called in and Acquainted the Comittee That on Friday the 19th of
Septr. there were about a Dozen of the Apprentices some of whom broke
Mr. Somner's head & beat Mr. Tomkins but they did not Know their Names
Therefore the Comittee Orderd sevl. of the Apprentices who by the Night
Cook Appear'd to be out that Night to come in and walk round the Table
wch being done Mr. Tomkins & Mr. Somner said they cou'd not be Possitive as to the
Persons but believed Lernan, William Groves< no role > , & Brookson were there-And
upon Examination It appear'd, That Saml. Band< no role > , Alban Lemon< no role > , Thos. Pallant< no role > This name instance is in set 25282529.
Richd. Williams< no role > , and Francis Groves< no role > , & Wm. Brookson< no role > , were in this Riot.
