862. JOHN GOSS proceedingsdefend was indicted for feloniously stealing, on the 15th of September , one muslin handkerchief, value 10 d. the property of James Langdale proceedingsvictim .

JAMES LANGDALE < no role > sworn.

I live on Ludgate-hill; on Friday the 15th of September, about eight in the evening, I was going up Holborn , near Staples Inn; I cried stop thief, having missed my handkerchief; it was an English muslin handkerchief; I missed it in a moment; I saw it in his hand.

- ARCHIBALD sworn.

My Lord, I was coming down Holborn, about eight o'clock; I was about two yards off the pavement; I saw Mr. Langdale, and I saw the prisoner put his hand in Mr. Langdale's pocket, and pull out the handkerchief; I immediately seized the prisoner by the hand in which he had the handkerchief; I seized him with some violence, and we both came to the ground together, but I never let go the handkerchief; I called the prosecutor, and he claimed the handkerchief.

I rent part of a house in Houghton-street, Clare-market; I am a carpenter.

What is the prisoner? - He is a carpenter ; I have known him three years; he works with his father; he worked along side me three quarters of a year; he always bore a good character.
