Examination TextThe Examination of Martha Singleton singlewoman in the workhouse of and in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields taken upon oath this fifth day of September in the year 1755. This Examinant on her oath saith that she is about 31 years of age and never was married, that she was a yearly hired servant to Mr Skelton Coachmaker in St Martin's Lane in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields for the space of 18 months at the yearly wages of 5 pounds and 10 shillings diet and lodging, quitted the same about 12 months ago, that she hath not kept house rented a tenement 10 pounds by the year paid any parish taxes nor hath been a yearly hired servant in any one place for 12 months together since, And this Examinant on her oath further saith that she was on the fifth day of August last delivered at the workhouse aforesaid of a Male bastard child (since christened John) yet living and is become chargeable to the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields, and that John Cawdell a Shopman to Mr Giles a Founder in Shoe Lane had carnal knowledge of her body on the 29th of October last on a bed in the for garrett of Mr Giles's house aforesaid and several times afterwards at the same time place at which or one which times he the said John Cawdell did beget on her body the said Male bastard child, and that he the said John Cawdell is the true and only father thereof and no man else. Sworn the day and year abovesaid before Benjamin Cox.
