Examination TextThe Examination of Ann Pickering in the workhouse of and in the Parish St Martin in the Fields within the liberty of Westminster passed from the Parish of St Anne within the liberty aforesaid taken upon oath this [blank] Day of [blank] 1772. This Examinant on her oath saith that she is 21 years of age, that she never was married nor bound an apprentice, that she was a yearly hired servant to Mr Cross a Shoemaker in that part of Great Newport Street which is in the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields for the space of 18 months at the yearly wages of 40 shillings diet and lodging, quitted the same about nine years ago, that she never kept house rented a tenement of 10 pounds by the year paid any parish taxes nor been a yearly hired servant in any one place for 12 months together since, And this Examinant on her voluntary oath further saith that she is now Great with child or children which is or are likely to be born a bastard or bastards and to become chargeable to the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields, and that John Nash a Soldier belonging to General Thomas's Company in the Second Regiment of Foot Guards did beget her with child or children she now goeth with and is pregnant of, and that he the said John Nash is the true and only father thereof and no man else. Taken in the workhouse the sixth Day of January 1772.
