Examination TextThe examination of Elizabeth Johnson in the workhouse of and in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields taken this second Day of October 1775. This Examinant on her oath saith that she is 83 years of age, that she is the widow of John Johnson (who died about 30 years ago) to whom she was married at St Martin's Church in the Parish aforesaid the eighth day of April which was in the year 1716, that her said husband was before his intermarriage to this Examinant (being single and unmarried) a yearly hired servant in the capacity of Coachman to Dr Wellsted in Tavistock Street in the Parish of St. Paul Covent Garden for the space of one year and an half all under one hiring (but what wages her said husband had of the said Dr. she this Examinant cannot tell), and in the said service married with this Examinant, and that her said husband for the last 40 days and upwards of his said service lay where his said Master's horses stood which was at the sign of the George in Long Acre, that her said husband never kept house rented a tenement of 10 pounds by the year nor paid any parish taxes after he quitted the said service, nor hath she this Examinant nor been a yearly hired servant in any one place for 12 months together since the death of her said husband.
