Examination TextThe Examination of Deborah Figgin removed by an order of removal from the Parish of St Andrew Holborn above the Bars in the County of Middlesex to the Parish of St Martin in the Fields taken this 11th Day of January in the year 1781. This Examinant on her oath saith that she is about 26 years of age, that she never was married nor bound an apprentice, that she was a yearly hired servant to Mr Riley, House Broker and Auctioneer, in Long Acre in the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields for the space of one year and eight months all under one hiring at the yearly wages of 8 pounds diet and lodging, quitted the said service about July 1779, that she hath not kept house rented a tenement of 10 pounds by the year paid any parish taxes nor been a yearly hired servant in any one place for 12 months together since, And this Examinant on her voluntary oath further saith that she is now big with child or children which is or are likely to be born a bastard or bastards and to become chargeable to the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields, and that John Cotrill Mill Wright at William Baker's a Mill Wright on Broad Wall Southwark had carnal knowledge of her body some time in the month of June last in and upon a bed in the Garret at the house of Mrs Williams in Ely Court in Holborn and several times afterwards at a publick house at Eton at which time or one of which times he the said John Cotrill did beget her with child or children she now goeth with and is pregnant of, and that he the said John Cotrill is the true and only father thereof and no man else. Sworn the 11th Day of January 1781 before William Hyde.
