Examination TextThe Examination of Susan Vaughan singlewoman taken upon oath this 20th Day of January in the year of our Lord 1739. Who upon her oath saith that she is about 28 years old, that she never was married, that on Tuesday the 26th Day of December last past she was delivered a Male bastard child of (afterwards christened Stephen) in the workhouse of and in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields within the liberty of Westminster aforesaid, and that the said Male bastard child hath from the time of the birth thereof unto the seventh Day of January instant (on which they the said Male bastard child died) being [sic] chargeable to the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields, and that one Thomas Burtfoot apprentice to Mr Simmonds an Engraver in Villiers Street in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields had carnal knowledge of her body sometime in or about the month of March last past in the room two pair of stairs forward at the house of the said Mr Simmonds in Villiers Street aforesaid and several times afterwards at the same place at which or one of which times he begot on her body the said Male bastard child, and that he the said Thomas Burtfoot is the true and only father thereof and no man else.
