Informations taken this Seventh day of
October 1773 at the Parish of St. John the Evangelist
within the Liberty of Westmr . in the County of
Middlesex upon an Inquisition touching the
death of Thomas Gray< no role > lying dead in the said
Parish Liberty of Westmr .

Howell Phillips< no role > a Lodger at Mrs. Barnes in St. Annis
Lane Westmr. Laborer on his Oath saith That he was
employed with several other Labourer (Thomas [..]
the Deced being one of them) in carrying Corks
Bundles out of Craft to the Shore at Mrs. [..]
wharf on Mill Bank in the Parish of St.John the
Evangelist Westmr. That the Deced was in the Claft
lifting up the Bundles upon the Backs of Dept.
and other Labourers who carried them to the share
Says that he had carried a load to Shore and was
returning to fetch another, and being at the [..]
heard a Man (one of the Carriers [..] who was [..]
Man was overboard,for help upon which Dept. run into the
Mud of about ten Yards from the Shore he found the
Deced lying on his left side with his Head cover
with the Mud, and a Bundle of the Corks lying
close to him, Says that he lifted up the Deced's [..]
Head, took a Quantity of the Mud out of his Month
but that he could not speak nor did Dept. afterwards observed
any Signs of life in him Says that he heard no
Quarrel or Disagreement between the Man that cried
out and the Deced, (there being no other person then
on Board the Craft) and believes that the Deced
Accidentally fell out of the Craft into the Mud and
was Suffocated.
