An Inquisition Indented taken for Our Sovereign Lord the King
at the Parish of Saint Jameswithin the Liberty of the Dean and Chapter of the
Collegiate Church of St. Peter Westminster , in the County of Middlesex , the twenty ninth day of November
in the Third-Year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Third by the grace of God of Great
Britain France and Ireland King Defender of the Faith and so forth, before Thomas Prickard< no role >
Gentleman, Coroner of our said Lord the King, for the said City and Liberty, on View of the Body of
Christopher Oliphant< no role > then and there lying Dead, upon the Oath of Thomas Burnett< no role >
Joseph Hornby< no role > , Edward Lee< no role > , Thomas Jones< no role > , Thomas Close< no role > , William Campdell< no role > , Henry Randell< no role >
William Thompson< no role > , Thomas Rapier< no role > , John Underwood< no role > , John Smallbun< no role > , William Sheppard< no role >
Adam Nelson< no role > , Samuel Crowther< no role > , William Keith< no role > and John Foster< no role > , good and Lawfull Men of the said
Liberty, duly chosen, and who being then and there duly Sworn and charged to inquire for our said
Lord the King, when, how and by what means the said Christopher Oliphant< no role > came to his Death
Do upon their Oath, say, That the said Christopher Oliphant< no role > not being of sound Mind Memory
and Understanding, but lunatick and distracted, on the Twenty seventh day of November in
the Year aforesaid, at the Parish aforesaid in the Liberty and County aforesaid, one End of a
certain Linnen Handkerchief unto a large Leaden Pipe fastened with Hold fasts to the Wall, in
a Cellar in the dwelling House of William Ludbey, situate and being in the Parish Liberty
and (County aforesaid, and the other End thereof about four Week, did Six tye and
Fasten, and therewith did then and there hang, suffocate, and strangle himself; of which said
Hanging, Suffocation and Strangling He the said Christopher Oliphant< no role > then and there Died
And so the Jurors aforesaid upon their Oath aforesaid, de say, that the said Christopher
Oliphant
< no role > not being of sound Mind Memory and Understanding, but lunatick and distracted
in Manner and by the Means aforesaid, did Kill himself. In Witness whereof as well the
said Coroner, as the said Thomas Burnett< no role > Foreman of the said Jurors, on the behalf of himself
and the rest of his said Fellows, in their presence, have to this Inquisition set their Hands and Seals
the Day Year and Place first abovementioned.
