some time before March last when six or seven Yeares had been spent
since the first applicacon without any prospect of Successe One Mr:

Brownjohn came to your Petrs: and acquainted them he
could be very Serviceable in procureing a Gratificacon for Yor: Petr: and
the other Surgeons and Apothecary and would undertake it upon an
Allowance of one Fourth parte of what should be obtained And yor:
Petr: haveing almost given over the Expectacons of Succeeding in this
Affaire were soon prevailed with to Consent thereto And the said Mr:
Brownjohn took upon him to Sollicite this Matter and brought severall
papers to yor Petrs: to be signed by them which he said were necessary and
propper towards obtaining the Gratificacon desired And yor: Petr: not in the
least suspecting or Imagining that he was about to sett up any Demand
of a Debt as owing by the Comrs: to yor: Petr: and the other Surgeons but
only to follow their request for a Gratuity they signed the papers he sent to
them and were told by him that what they so signed were only such as
were requisite in the Forms of that Office for Obtaining such Gratuity
which the Comr: afterwards thought fitt to settle at six shillings and Eight
pence p head and amounted to One thousand three hundred Eighty
two pounds For her third parts thereof amounting to Nine hundred and
Twenty pounds Thirteen shillings and four pence yor: Petr: gave
Receipts but actually received no more then 600: Guineas the remaindr:
being deducted by Mr: Brownjohn for Sollicitacon and Charges.

That yor: Petr: intended as soon as the last payment was paid
to distribute the whole among the persons concerned and although they
were not till very lately acquainted with what yor: Petrs: have received yet
yor: Petrs: hope that in regards severall other persons were privy thereto it
may sufficiently take of the Suspition of a Contrary designe in case yor:
Petrs: could be thought Guilty of entertaining any such And the Counter
Notes given by yor: Petrs: to Indempnify against the Demands of the others
concerned are a farther Evidence of their just Intentions herein.

That yor: Petrs: had nothing else in their View or expectacon but
a Gratuity and looked upon this Money to be Issued only as such And they
disclaime all manner of Pretencons to any Debt owing by the said Comr:
to them acknowledging that there is noe Foundacon for the same and that
Receipts by which this Money seems to be asked and received as a Debt
and wherein are Suggestions Impropper to have been used on
behalfe of your Petrs: by their Intire Relyance on the managemt: of
the said Mr: Brownjohn and not distinguishing (as they ought to
have done) between the Demand of a Debt and the suing for a
Gratuity And they acknowledge with great Concern that in the
prosecucon of this Affaire they have given just Occasion for the Censure
of this Comittee but for as much as the same hath happened rather
through Inadvertency than Designe and for that your Petr: are ready
to oblige themselves to pay and dispose of the Money they have receds
in such manner as her Majesty or the [..] shall please to directon
and for that they have for many years past diligently and faithfully
acquitted themselves in the Dutyes of their respective places
