Newark 28th. Janry 1786

Sir
On Account of the very great Expence which has
attended the passing of Vagrants thros the County of Nothingham
the Justices of the peace for this County have come to a Resolution
that no Vagrant who comes with a Pass shall be received or passed
thro. this County unless it shall appear by the pass that such Vagrant
has been previously punish'd by Whipping or Imprisonment as
directed by the Stat of 17th. Geo:2. and they have therefore commanded
me to acquaint you that they shall appoint a proper person to
examine the passes which are brought with Vagrants to the Vagrant
Carrier for this County that such only may be allowed to pass as
appear to be five beer: so punished, and they therefore desire that
you will acquaint the Justices of the peace acting for your County
with shall be solution and to request them not to grant any pass
without the Vagrant having been previously punished and to lend
their assistance to suppress the present great numbers of Vagrants.
