Whereas it appearreth unto us Robert Dennett< no role > and Clifford William Phillips< no role > Esqrs.
two of his Maties Justices of the Peace of the County of Middlesex (One being of the Quorum) Inhabiting
in or next the Limits of the Parish Church of the Parish of St. George in the Said County Upon the
Examinacon of Hannah Canterbury< no role > wife of William Canterbury< no role > marriner taken in writeing and
upon Oath the 15th day of May 1734 That in the Month of March last was two years she
the parted with her said husband he then belonging to the Shipp call'd the Bristol Merchant
Capr. Marshall Comander then bound up the Streights beyond the Seas where he then went and
hath not Since returnd not hath she seen him Since And it further appear's unto
us the said Justices of the Peace that upwards for Six months after the said Hannah Canterbury
had parted with her said husband the said Shipp being then out of England one Robert
Negus
< no role > a Cooper who lives in brewhouse lane in the Parish of St. John of Wapping Kept
her company for Several Months and had Several times the Carual Knowledge of her
body by which she conceivd with Child by him the said Robert Negus And that on
the 13th day of October last pest she was delivered of a Female bastard Child in the
house of one Butcher in May fields buildings in the Said Parish of St. George which said
Female bastard Child is become a Charge to the said parish and is so likely to continue of
which the Church wardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish have complaind
And Whereas it further appearreth unto us the said Justices of the Peace upon
the further examinacon of the said Hannah Canterbury taken in Writeing and upon Oath
that the said Robert Negus< no role > did beget on the body of her the said Hannah Canterbury the said
Female bastard Child Therefore we the said Justices of the Peace Do adjudge him the said
Robert Negus the Only and true Pulative Father of the said Female Bastard And do Order
and Appoint him the said Robert Negus further with upon notice of the our Order to pay to
the said Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish or to some or one of
the same of One pound Seven Shillings and Six pence the said Sum being by them allready
disbursed and paid for and towards the reliefe and maintenance of the Said Female Bastard
Child and other incident and Necessary charges Accrewed for and by reason of the Birth of
of the said Female bastard Child in the said Parish And also we do hereby further Order
him the said Robert Negus to pay or cause to be paid Weekly and every Week to the
Said Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor and their Successors for the time being or to
Some or one of them the Sum of two Shillings and Six pence a week weeklyas aforesaid
from the day of the date hereof for and towards the maintenance and Keeping the said
Female bastard Child for so long time as she shall remaine as Charge to the said Parish
And that he Shall of and from the Charge of the said Female Bastard Child at all times
here after save harmless and Indemnify the said parish by him the said Robert Negus
giving forthwith Security to performe the Same Given under and hands and Seale this
15th day of May Anno Dom 1734
