December 1789.

"Gentlemen

"In pursuance of your desire signified to me
"at your last Meeting on the Ground in Cold Bath fields , that
"I should discharge James Pingney, the present Labourer in
"Trust there, at Christmas next, I immediately gave him
"Notice thereof, and have since made much enquiry for a
"proper Person to succeed him but without effect, And as
"from the nature of the business, incorruptible Integrity, &
"Skill, as well as constant attention is necessary, in the resident
"Inspector, and the variety and extended situations of my private
"business, may not admit of my giving so frequent Attendance at
"the Building in future, as I should under those circumstances
"wish to do; I must beg leave to decline the direction of the
"Building as clerk of the Works after this Season closes; & hope
"you will do me the honour to accept my Resignation.

"I shall measure & Certify all the Works done at
"the conclusion of this Season & shall be happy at all times in
"future to give every Information and Assistance in the business
"which my concern in it hither to may enable me to do.

"I have the honour to be.
"Gentlemen
"Your most Obedient
"& very hble Servt.
"S, P, Cockerell.
