Informations of Witnesses taken at the
parish of Saint Giles without Cripplegate
in the Ward of Cripplegate without in
London the 23d. day of September 1786 or
view of the body James Barrett< no role > there
lying dead.

Thomas Newman< no role > lodger at Mrs. Pinks at the Helmet
Alehouse on Holborn Hill Coachman maketh oath that last
night about half past seven o'Clock he saw the deced and Robert
Jones both Coachmen) stripped with their shirts off in the street
opposite the aforesaid Alehouse as going to fight and Dept interfered
& made them both go into the House & they were put into seperate
Rooms and Dept says that Jones seemed a verse to fighting and sayed
he would rather put on his Cloaths than fight, that he did not want
to flight him (the deced) or any other man; but the deced insisted on
fighting, and therefore they again went into the street, and there
fought together, says several blows passed between them, and also
several [..] false; Dept says the persons around persuaded them to give
ever fighting, and that Jones was willing to do so, and sayed he would
rather not fight, but the deced insisted on fighting until one of them
should gain the day. Dept says the last blow that was given, was by
Jones who struck the deced as Dept believes on the left side of his body
which knocked the deced down, and he was taken up and led into
the House apparently much hart; says he afterwards while in the
House appeared to be very ill and speechless, and Dept assisted to put
him into a Coach [..] to take him house and a person went in
the Coach with him.
