The Prisoner is a Chairman and a very honest Man bears a good Character and takes,
great pains to get an honest Livelihood and on the 19th. day of December above 8 Clock at Night
that being the day the Robbery was sayd to be Committed the Prisoner had been to See his Sister and
as he was going down Gutter Lane
he heard a Noise step Thiefe On which the prisoner turned
back and ran along with the rest of the people with an intent to Apprehend the Thiefe And when prisoner
came into Cheapside
he nor any of the people saw which way the Thiefe ran When on a sudden to

one of the prosecutors named in the Commitment Challenged the
prisoner and in insisted that towards Man that stole the Bindle and had him before the Lord Mayor,
at Grace Hall
and when prisoners was before his Lordship on his Examination Richard Stroud< no role >
Declared that he never had seen Prisoners face until he Apprehended him but Swore to his Back,
And farther that he never last sight of him until he Apprehended him after the Bundle was thrown down
the there were sevl. Short Turnings between the Cross Keys Inn
from whence the Goods are sayd to be
Stolen and the place where prisoner was Apprehended so that if prisoners had been the Real Thiefe it is
almost Imposssible but prosecutor must have lost Sight of him And prosecutor further sayd that there was
a Man belonging to the Inn that Inn that Slipped prisoner up with the Bundle and could Swear to Prisoners Force,
out no such person was produced before the Lord Mayor And its to be hoped that no person will be so
Wicked as to swear it in Court, further being Intirely [..]

Examine into the Inn Yard and Acquainted the Book Keeper that he met a Man with a Bundle going out
of the Inn And heard him Oath the Book keeper if he had delivered any Parcel When the Book Keeper
Sayd he had not and bid him go after the man and accordingly Henry Stroud and Richard Stroud both
ran after the Man and James Reynolds< no role >
ran after them also in Order to Apprehend the Thiefe Crying
out Stop Thief And at the end of Old Street
which is a Short Street that goes out of Woodstreet
a little
below the Cross keys Inn
and lead into Gutter Lane
there the Person that had the Bundle threw it
down turned the Corner of Gold Stry [..] and ran toward Cheapside
up Gutter Lane
Here all the people
that ran after the Thiefe lost sight of him and when they came into Gutter Lane
there were several
persons Running and Crying out [..] top Thiefe And when they came into Cheap side no one could tell
which Way the Thiefe ran When on a suddain the porter of the Inn laid hold of the Prisoner and
sayd that he was the Man and had him taken before the Lord Mayor
