Thursday 14th. Octr. 1731

Govr. elected


Upon reading a Report form the Committee of this House bearing date the seventeenth
day of Septr. last setting forthThat in pursuance of an Order of Court of the 15th. of
January last This Comittee having considerd of Mr. John Boyfeild< no role > Scarlet Dyer in
Southwark who was nominated by John Elderton< no role > Esqr . to be one of the Govrs. of these Hospitals
It is the opinion of this Comitee that he is a very proper person to be a Governor if the
Court shall think fit All which never the less is submitted to the Judgment of the Court
And it is ordered that this opinion be reported to the next CourtThis Court doth
elect the said Mr. Boy feild to be one of the Governors of these Hospitals And it is
ordered that a Staff be sent to him accordingly

At this Court John Richards< no role > a poor Boy at the nomination of the Right
Honourable The Earl of Scarsdall was ordered to be put out Apprentice to

At this Court Thomas Cole< no role > was ordered to be made free of this City having servd
his apprenticeship in this Hospital to Benjamin Thatcher< no role > one of the arts masters of
this Hospital P Indre dated 16th. Septr. 1723.

Elected Artsmaster }


Upon reading the Several humble Petitions of Richard Holliwell< no role > weaver
Martin Newth< no role > and William Wenden< no role > Shoemakers each praying to be admitted an
Artsmaster of this Hospital in the room of Mr. John Mill< no role > Weaver deced & to take as
many Apprentices as the Court shoud think fit and the Question being put whether a
Weaver or a Shoemaker should be now chosen It was Ordered that a Shoemaker be
elected and then the said Martin Newth< no role > & William Wenden< no role > being put in nomination
the plurality of hands appeared to be for the said William Wenden Whereupon It is
Ordered that the said William Wenden (upon delivering a Certificate of his Settlement
to the Clark and producing a Copy of his freedom of this City & giving Security as ususal
in the like cases) be admitted an Artsmaster of this Hospital untill the next Election
day And it is further Ordered That he have such apartment (as the Comittee of
this House shall direct.)

& £1000 to Bethlem }


This Court being acquainted that Mrs. Sarah Baylis< no role > late of the Parish of Lee in the County
of Kent Spinster deced by her Will bearing date on or about the 17th. day of October 1730 Did
amongst other things be queath as follows Vizt. Item I give to the President & Treasurer of
the Hospital of Bethlem erected for Incurables One thousand pounds In Trust for the
poor people of the said Hospital which the said President & Treasurer are to receive in the Stock
of The [..] ited Company of Merchants trading to the East Indies which Stock I do order my
Executor hereafter named to transferr to them six Months after my Decease for the purpose
aforesaid and of her said Will made Mr. Richard Titterton< no role > sole Executor and the Clerk
of these Hospitals acquaninting the Court That he had by the direction of the Treasurer & the
Comettee of this House laid a Copy of the said Will before Mr. Attorney General with a Quare
Whether the Hospital is to have £1000. Stock or only so much Stock as at the Current
price will amount to £1000 Money& that Mr. Attorney General had under written his
opinion as followsVizt. I cannot say that this Case is perfectly clear, but taking all
the words of the Clause together I apprehend that the Hospital is entitled only to so much Stock
as at the Current price will amount to £1000 in money according to the value of the Stock
at the end of six months after the Testatrix's deceasewhich being read unto this Court
If was moved that a Bill in Chancery be brought agt. the Executer of the said Will for the
opinion of the Court whether the Governors of the Hospital of Bethlem are to have
£1000 in money or £1000. in east India Stock It is ordered that the consideration,
thereof be deferrd till the next Court.
