,,Justice and right decision which best suits the Character
"and feelings of an affluent Publick Body- We therefore in
"the first place beg leave to observe that the Bond in
"Question appears by the Copy furnished to be dated 25th.
"September 1775 Mr. Smith died soon afterwards as we
"believe in the Year 1777 and that his Family have not
"since had any Connection or intercourse with Wingfield
"and were totally ignorant of the Bond, they must therefore
"be considered as innocent sufferers if legally bound to answer
"any Claim whatever upon it. It is we believe admitted.
"on all hands that Wingfield had by his Services and
"faithful discharge of his Duty for a great number of
"Years obtained the almost confidence and good Opinion
"of the Committee who had from time to time the
"superintendance of his Conduct and the auditing and
"Passing his Periodical Accounts and we have to
"submit to the candour of those Gentlemen whether on
"not if they had examined the Accounts of this Man
"as their receiver with that Execution and Accuracy
"suitable and necessary for detecting any Frand by
"him and had called upon him for his Balance
"from time to time, he could have committed the
"Frand and deception with which he now stands
"charged and we further submit that if through
"misplaced confidence the Committee have been induced
"to look less watchfully after this Man than they
"otherwise might and would have done and have
"thereby suffered a Coss if would be the hardest
"Of all Possible Cases to call upon the innocent and
"ignorant representatives of his Surety Two and
"twenty Years after his death to make
"good any Part of such loss and upwards of
"Twenty Years after all his effects have
"been fully administered without any
"Notice of the Bond in question and
"under these Circumstances we beg leave to
"submit this Case to the Consideration of the
"Committee trusting that under the Circumstances
"of it they will not feel any inclination either from
