Middx,

To all Constables of Staines in the County of Middx and to the Keeper
of the New Prison at Clerkenwell in and for the said County

Whereas

Elizabeth Sumpter< no role > of Staines aforesaid Singlewoman in her
Examination taking in writing upon oath before John Roberts< no role > Esqr.
one of his Majesty's Justices of the peace for the sd. County of Middx hath
Declared that in the month of September which was in the year of our Lord
1768 in the Parish of Staines aforesaid she the said Elizabeth Sumpter< no role >
was delivered of a Male Bastard Child and that the said Bastard Child
become chargeable to the said Parish of Staines , And hath charged James
Pain
< no role > of Staines aforesaid Labourour with having Gollen her with Child
of the said bastard Child And whereas the same James Pain< no role > being
now personally present before me being brought by a warrant
Granted by the aforesaid John Roberts< no role > Esqr. upon Application to him
for that Purpose made by John Bannister< no role > one of the Overseers of
the Poor of the said Parish hath refused to give security to
Indemnefy the said Parish and hath also refused to enter into
a Recognizance with Sufficient Suretys upon Conditions to
Appear at the Next General Sessions of the Peace to be holden
for the said County and to abide and perform such order or
Order's as shall be made in persuance of an act passed in the
Eighteenth year of the Reign of her Late Majesty Queen
Elizabeth concerning Bastards begotten & Born out of
Lawfull Matrimony, These are therefore to command you the
said Constable to take & Convey the said James Pain< no role > to the New Prison
as Clerkenwell in the said County & to deliver him to the Keeper thereof
together with this Warrant And you the said Keeper are hereby
Commanded to receive the sd. James Pain< no role > into your Custody in the sd.
Prison And him theres after to Keep until he shall Give such
security or Enter unto such Recognizance as aforesaid or be otherwise
from thence lawfully delivered Given under my hand & Seal
this 25th. day of October in the Year of our Lord 1769
