"would in his Opinion have the preferrence to any Goal in
"the Kingdom in point of Air and Cleanliness, Mr.. Aris then
"said he thought that every Prisoner had sufficient access
"to their Friends Burk replied he did not mean they should
"have such access as they had in Newgate that was a
"Shocking place they could do as they pleased have any,
"Person in or any thing to eat and Drink that a few Days
"after Christmas Le Maitre and others had had a Ball in
"Newgate and had issued 50. Cards of Invitation Mr..
"Aris asked him if the Ball had been to which he replied
"yes and that there were Fiddles and Flutes Mr.. Aris
"said was not that improper to which he replied he
"thought it was.

"And Your said Committee further Report That
"M.. Webb the Surgeon was Examined and stated as
"follows Vizt.. "It is the Governors Orders to his Servants
"that I should be made acquainted with every Person who
"is sent to the Prison for any length of time and I make
"it an invariable Rule to see them and Examine into
"the State of their Health I saw Joseph Burks they Day
"after he came into the Prison on asking him how he
"found himself he said much Indisposed from his
"long Confinement in Newgate and that had he
"Continued much longer in that Prison he should
"have Died I saw him frequently after and he had
"not been long there before I perceived his Health much
"improved he never was in the Infirmary nor had he
"ever any Medicine given him never having had
"Occasion for any on his Asking the Liberty to have his
"own Bed brought to him it was immediately Complied
"with as to the Vermin he Complains he met with in his
"Blankets I have every reason to think he brought them
"with him for he Complained of a violent itching which
