December 1798.

Quantity of such Food, - That the Average of Sick
Prisoners at the abovementioned time was from 5.
to 6. only in Number That according to the present
Orders of the Sessions the Prisoners are to have Meat
and Broth four Days in the Week, that during 40.
Days of the time aforesaid there was delivered 15,200.
pounds of Bread each Prisoner being allowed a
pound Loaf Per Day, and it appears to your Committee
that each of the Servants (16. in Number.) belonging
to the Prison are Allowed (according to Custom as
it is said) two pounds Loaves each Per Day and
that the Governor (according to Custom) takes Two
or Three Loaves as his occasions require.

That besides Bread and Meat delivered as
aforesaid great Quantities of Vegetables are dressed
for the Prisoners That the Butchers Bills for 43.
Days for the House of Correction amounted to
£100..18s..7½d. and the Bakers Bill for 40. Days
to £118..5s..8d.

That the Average number of Prisoners in the
House of Correction each Day during the time
aforesaid was about 250. Persons so that the
Expence of keeping each Prisoner Per Day was
something more than 5d. without including
Vegetables Oatmeal Cloaths Firing for Dressing
the Dinners and Additional Servants in
Consequence of the almost constant Cooking
that there was paid for Coals in the last Year
the sum of £435..16s..0d. the greatest part of
which were Consumed in the Kitchen of the House
of Correction

Your Committee further state that with
a View of considering whether so large and Expen-
sive an Allowance from the County is necessary
