December 1777

November 19 I sent for the Constable the prosecutor and his wife
and Examined them as follows

to Andrew Archer< no role >

Did you on the 11 instant come before me & possitively Swear that Mary
Young
< no role > had taken and carried away a Petticoat and three Quarters of a
Yard of New Cloth from Your Lodgings (Your property) and did I not
in consequence thereof grant You a warrant

Answer Yes

[..] are 2

Was it or was it not Your intention that the said Mary Young< no role >
should be brought before the Justice who granted the Warrant

Answer it was

[..] are 3

What prevented you from bringing the prisoners before him
Answer Being Summoned before Justice Durden for detaining
a Bed belonging to Mary Young< no role > till she paid me Two Shillings and
Seven pence which she owed me I and my Wife attended and on our
entering Mr. Durdens Office found only his Clerk and Mary Young< no role >
there-the Clerk immediately asked if I had any Warrant against
Mary Young< no role > being answered Yes-the Clerk said if I did not Send
immediately for the Constable and the warrant to be heard before his
Master He would directly send me to Bridewell Mr. Durden then
came into the Office and did himself in person order me to go directly
and fetch the Constable to Serve the warrant on Mary Young< no role > being
hightened-I went directly and brought the Constable who served it

Mr. Durden then went on the Business of the Sumons
had the Bed brought to his House and afterwards taken to mine to be
kept till 2-7 was paid

in regard to the felony my wife produced a Box of mine which had
been broke open-and a Yard and half of New Ribbon-and three Quarters
of a Yard of New Cloth (mentined in the Warrant) stolen from thence

The petticoat Mary Young< no role > had upon her

Mr. Durden upon seeing the Box and a Bonded Knife with which
it was supposed to broke open Asked my wife if she saw Mary Young< no role >
break it Open-to which she replied no also where she was when it was
broke Open

She answered she was out with her Milk that she left it safe locked
and found it broke open upon her return home and the things Stolen
from it as above
