Order of Recommendation

instead of the wooden
Fence between the
Prisoners Yard and the
Passage leading to the
Keepers House at New
Prison Etc.}

Thomas Cavenagh< no role > Keeper of New Prison at Clerkenwell in the
County having exhibited his humble Petition unto this Court Setting
forth That there is an Old house belonging to this County Standing
on part of the Garden on one Side the Said Prison which projects
as well over part of the Said Prison as over the Brewhouse and
Garden of one Mr. Burroughs the bottom of New Prison Walk , And
that the Said house (ever Since the Petitioner has been Keeper of the Said
Prison) has been very much out of Repair and constantly decaying
insomuch that the Wood work, Roof, and Foundation are quite decayed
and rotten that it is dangerous and hazardous to the Lives of any Persons
to go into the Same, or in a high Wind to go by the Same into the Said
Garden , Several parts having lately blown down, And that unless
the Said House is taken down there is great reason to believe that
Some part of it will fall on the Said Prison and thereby demolish
that part it Shall So fall on and Kill the People therein, And that
the wooden Fence or pailing of the Said Prison which confines the
Prisoners from the Petitioners house is much decayed, and that the
old Materials of the Said old house (if taken down) will make a brick
Wall in the Stead of the Said wooden Fence, and otherwise be of the
greatest Service in repairing the Said Goal, which the Petitioner is
willing to do at his own Expence And the Petitioner therefore prayed
this Court to consider the Premisses and to make Such Order therein as
to this Court Should Seem meet, And Several of his Majesty< no role > 's Justices
of the Peace of this County, to wit, Nicholas Jeffreys< no role > , John Poulson< no role >
Thomas Ellys< no role > and Thomas Fothergill< no role > Esquires having by Writing
under their hands Signifyed unto this Court that at the request of the
Chairman Etc they having on this day examined into the merits of the
Said Petition on viewing the Premisses think it reasonable that for the
good of the County it Should be complyed with, Whereupon this Court
upon Consideration of the Said Matter Doth Order that it be And It
is hereby recommended unto the Said Justices of the Peace or any three of
them to give direction for taking down the Said Old House and erecting
the brick Wall abovementioned out of the old Materials of the Said old,
house in Stead of the Said wooden Fence at the Expence of the Said
Keeper and to See that the Said Wall be well built in a Substantial
and workmanlike manner And that the residue of the Materials
which Shall not be used in erecting the Said Brick Wall be preferred and applyed for repairing the Said Goal
which the Said Keeper is to do at his own Expence
us is above Specifyed in his Said Petition,
