This Report made in December Sessions 1738 pursant to an Order made in
October Sessions 1738 out the type of this Report was Suspended by Direction of the then Chairman, and
and Same not entered until Easter Sessions 1739.


Report concerning the
Estate belonging to the
County of Middx, and the
advanceing of Some
money out of the
[..] County Rents
towards repairing the
House of Correction at
Clerkenwell Etc.

} Middx Wee whose names are hereunto Subscribed being a Quorum of
the Committee of his Majesties Justices of the peace for the County
of Middx Appointed by the Order of General Quarter Sessions of
the peace hereunto Annexed to look into the Deeds relating to the
Estate belonging to this County heretofore given or Conveyed by
Sr. Baptist Hicks or any other person or persons, And to See to what
uses & purposes the rents and Profits of the Said Estate were
given, And to See what is in hand arising from the Said Rents
and profits, And if any part thereof may be properly applyed
towards repairing the House of Correction Do hereby certifye to
the Court of General Sessions of the peace holden for the Said
County, That Pursuant to the Said Order a Meeting has been
had for the purposes aforesaid, And that upon Inspecting the
Deeds and writings relating to the Said Estate
Itt Appears that the Ground, on which the present Building
called Hicks's Hall is Erected, was granted by King James the
first by Letters Patent bearing date the 7th. of June 7 Jac 1st.
1609 unto Sir Thomas Late & other Justices of Peace for
Middlesex and to their Heirs, to be built upon or used for a
Sessions house & Common Prison or house of Correction for
Committing thereto all manner of Offenders & Malefactors,
other than for the Capital Crimes of Treason and Felony (therein
reciting that Newgate was not large enough) which Said Sessions
house or Common Prison or house of Correction So to be built on
as aforesaid was to be for the use of the Said County and the
Justices of the peace thereof, the Keeper of the Said Prison to be
appointed by the Said Justices.

A Power is also thereby granted to the Persons Seized of the Said peice of
Ground for the time being whensoever there Shall be left of them
not above Six alive, that they Shall Convey the Same to any
other Justices of the peace for the Said County and their Heirs, to
the number of twelve at the least.

Itt will Appear by a Deed dated between Sir Thomas Lake< no role > &
others Justices of the peace on the one part and Sir Baptist Hicks's
of the other part the Said Sr. Thomas Lake< no role > & others Dennised to the
Said Sr. Baptist Hicks, the Said piece of Ground and Buildings
thereupon in St. John Street (reserving to the Justices and other
persons liberty at the Sessions to resort thereto, and to use the
Great Chamber, mother Chamber on the North Side, and the
