James Campbell< no role > of Fetter lane London Carpenter maketh Oath and saith
that being a Constable he was sent for to go and take charge of Samuel Taylor< no role >
and Jeremiah Peacock< no role > two Boys who were [..] charged with picking the Pocket of one
Mr Platel and this Deponent immediately took them into his Custody and carried
them to Wood Street Compter where they remained till the next day when they
were taken from thence and carried before the Sitting Alderman at Guildhall
and upon Examination of the Prosecutor and one other Witness they were
committed for Tryal at the next Session at the Old Bayley and the Handkerchief
that Mr Platel's pocket was picked of was given to this Deponent to produce
when called for on the prosecution of the said two Prisoners and the Alderman
bound this Deponent over to appear And this Deponent attended at the Old
Baily on the 14th. 15th. & 16th. of September last in order to have given his Evidence
and attended with Mr Platel and the other Witness to have the Bill drawn up
at the Clerk of Arraigns Office at the Session House in the Old Bayley and
that Mr Platel [..] informed this Deponent that he had
no occasion to go with them before the Grand Jury to give his Evidence for that
he Mr Platel and the other Witness would be sufficient And next day this
Deponent waited on Mr Platel the Prosecutor who informed him it was all over
and he might deliver him his Handkerchiefandwhich he did and never expected
to have heard any thing more about the Matter for being informed so he never
attended and for that reason and no other did he neglect to give his Evidence and
had he known the nature of his Recognizance should notwithstanding have
gone and given his Evidence before the Grand Jury for by not attending he
finds by Mr Shelton's Letter that he has been lead wrong and that his
Recognizance is likely to be forfeited which if it is must rim this Deponent
and his Family therefore most humbly hopes and begs as he hasignorantly
and not intentionally committed any Crime that his Recognizance may not
be estreated

Sworn at the Sessions House in the
old Bailey the 18th of October 1785 }

By the Court.

James Campbell< no role >
