To the Right Honble The Lord Mayor< no role > of the City of London and the rest of His
Majestys Justices of the Peace for the same City in their General Quarter Session of
the Peace assembled.

The humble Petition of Thomas Townsend< no role >

Sheweth

That your Petitioner was on the Eighteenth day of July last Past Convicted
by William Plomer< no role > Knight Mayor of the City of London and one of His Majesty< no role > 's Justices
of the Peace for the said City and Liberties thereof upon a certain Information of one Henry
Morton then lately before exhibited to the said Justice against your said Petitioner, for
That your said Petitioner on the 29th. day of April then last past not regarding the Statutes aforesaid Lord the King did keep
a Coach or Carriage commonly called a Diligence, for the purpose of conveying Passengers for
hire to and from different places within the Shingdon of Great Britain namely from the
Cross Keys< no role > Inn in Gracechurch Street in the said City to Bromley in the County of Kent
and did let out the same for such purpose without having first obtained a Licence under
the Hands of Two of His Majesty< no role > 's Commissioner for managing the Duties on Stamped
Vellum Parchment and Paper or some person duly authorized by them agreeable to the
directions of a certain Act of Parliament made and passed in the Twentieth year of His
present Majesty's Reigh intituled "An Act for repealing an Act made in the Nineteenth
year of the Reign of HIs present Majesty intituled "An Act for granting unto His
Majesty Certain Duties on Licences to be taken out by all persons letting Horses to"
"hire for travelling in the manner therein mentioned and certain Duties on all Horses"
"let to hire for the purpose of travelling post and by Time and upon certain Carriages
therein mentioned and for granting other duties in lieu thereof" against the form of the
Statute in that Case made and provided.

That the said Justice did therefore declare and adjudge that your said Petitoner
had forfeited the Sum of Two pounds of lawful money of Great Britain for the Offence
aforesaid to be distributed as the Law directs according to the form of the Statute in the
Case made and provided.

That your Petitioner conceiving himself Aggrieved by the said Conviction
and adjudication of the said JusticeOath doth thereforehumbly appeals [..]
Honble Courtagainst the same and prays such Relief in the premises as to this
Honble Court shall seem meet

And your Petitioner as in Duty bound shall ever pray
